Email the Governor to protest! http://gov.ca.gov/interact#email

Hello, my name is Talia Lawrence. I am 16 years old and go to school in West Los Angeles. I am the sole founder of SACCAP: Students Against the Closure of California Parks. My peers and I are deeply concerned due to the fact that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed to close 48 State Parks in California as part of his budget-reducing plan. Not only does he plan to permanently discontinue the activities of the parks, but also to reduce the amount of lifeguards at beaches throughout California. If he is successful, there will be a new law passed that allows the remaining lifeguards to enforce a swimming limit. In other words, a swimmer or a surfer will only be able to paddle a short distance out into sea before crossing the legal boundaries set by the governor.

The governor claims that the closure of these parks will save up to eight million dollars for the state. However, the results could be devastating for California’s  economy. Our state heavily thrives off of tourist income. The termination of these beautiful parks would greatly reduce tourist flow, causing inflation in our already cascading economy. There will also be thousands of jobs lost; not only those of lifeguards, but park rangers, maintenance staff, and wildlife caretakers. ironically, the closure of these parks will require more security than that of the presently open parks. This is because uninhabited ares of land provide space for illegal activity such as defilement of government property, drug use and sales, violence, and other forms of assault.
Which parks and beaches will be closed?
